Birth Control Shots Linked To Brain and Spinal Cord Tumors

Depo-Provera is the brand name for medroxyprogesterone acetate, a contraceptive injection containing the hormone progestin. The birth control shot is administered by injection once every 3 months.

Depo-Provera is typically prescribed to prevent pregnancy; however, it is also used to treat endometriosis, as a palliative treatment for certain cancers, and other conditions related to menopause.

The use of Depo-Provera birth control shots has been linked to brain or spinal cord tumors (meningiomas).

A study by the British Medical Journal found that if used for longer than a year, Depo-Provera increases the risk of meningiomas (usually noncancerous) by almost 6 times.

Most meningiomas grow slowly, but because they form in tissues around the brain, they can put pressure on the brain and often need surgical removal.

The tumors can be life-threatening, and the surgery involved carries risks, particularly to brain structures near the tumors, which can sometimes be damaged.

Meningiomas also require treatment, such as radiation or surgery, which is life altering due to the potential side effects of having brain surgery, not to mention time-off needed for recovery, having to take medication after or potentially for the rest of your life, etc.

Other common side effects of meningioma treatments are seizures, additional brain surgeries, and potential life-threatening complications from having brain surgery.

As a result, many patients are currently filing lawsuits against Pfizer, the manufacturer of the Depo-Provera, as well as other manufacturers, alleging that the companies failed to warn patients about the risks.

Birth Control Shots Lawsuits

In 2021, Pfizer settled a class action lawsuit with a group of Canadians who used Depo-Provera and claimed to have suffered bone mineral density loss as a result.

In 2022, the FDA designated a recall of Depo-Provera as Class II, meaning that use of the product could cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, and there is a possibility of serious harm.

According to a recent complaint, the Depo-Provera birth control shots have been linked to brain and spinal cord tumors in women, along with other life-changing diagnoses.

Other complaints state that Pfizer failed to adequately test the medication before marketing it, was aware of the potential risk associated with long-term use of the shots, and failed to warn patients and healthcare providers about the risks.

Although Pfizer is in the process of updating product labels to reflect the potential long-term risks associated with its birth control shots, it might be too late for some women, whose lives have already been affected by a life-threatening diagnosis.

Lawsuits are currently being filed against Pfizer and other manufacturers to help compensate women for their pain and suffering after being diagnosed with brain tumors following the use of the birth control shot.

If you or a loved one has suffered a brain or spinal cord tumor after receiving birth control shots, you might be entitled to compensation.

We know that even 7-figure compensation can’t relieve suffering, but compensation can help reduce financial stress.
