Clergy Abuse Legislation

On September 21, 2018, the Michigan Department of the Attorney General launched an investigation into clergy sexual abuse throughout the State of Michigan, focusing on the Dioceses of Michigan’s Catholic Churches.

The Attorney General has publicly named this a major issue and given it the attention that it deserves.

On October 5, 2020, the Michigan Attorney General’s Office released a report in which the Clergy Abuse Investigative Team uncovered a total of 454 priests accused of sex abuse, 811 survivors, and 11 clergy members who were charged.

In addition, the investigative team has found that Grand Rapids has the highest number of accused clergy members and survivors, with 105 priests and 207 survivors.

On October 27, 2022, the Michigan Attorney General’s office released a Report of Alleged Abuse at Marquette Catholic Diocese about allegations of abuse in the Marquette Catholic Diocese.

The report is a compilation of the information obtained from tip lines, victim interviews, police investigations, open-source media, paper documents seized from the Diocese, and electronic documents found on the diocesan computers, as well as reports of allegations disclosed by the Diocese.

This report contains detailed descriptions of allegations of sexual abuse and other sexual misconduct (including grooming and misuse of authority) against minors and adults.

Legislation has now been introduced that opens Michigan’s statute of limitations for sexual abuse survivors, regardless of when the abuse occurred, the time between the date of abuse and the bill’s effective date, or the age of the survivor.

This means that anyone who was ever sexually abused or inappropriately touched by a priest, another clergy member or church staff may soon be eligible for significant compensation.
