Dr. Kumar’s Federal Investigation
An extensive investigation into former physician Dr. Sanjeev Kumar is underway, as he has been federally indicted on multiple charges.
Kumar was a practicing physician specializing in oncology and gynecology; he mainly practiced at Poplar Avenue Clinic, which he owned in Memphis, Tennessee.
He also practiced medicine at Baptist Medical Group Gynecology Surgical Center and was affiliated with Saint Francis Hospital-Memphis.
A recent complaint states that Kumar repeatedly engaged in sexual abuse disguised as medically necessary care, as well as other forms of inappropriate behavior, like enticing women to travel across state lines to his clinic, where he subjected them to sexual abuse under the guise of medical care.
According to the indictment, Dr. Kumar failed to inform patients that he was reusing medical devices during hysteroscopy procedures at the Poplar Avenue Clinic.
Kumar sexually abused women by conducting medically unnecessary gynecologic procedures with medical devices that he held under unsanitary conditions and reused on patients when they were required to be disposed of or properly reprocessed.
He then fraudulently billed Medicare and Medicaid, claiming the treatments were medically necessary and performed with new or properly sterilized equipment.
Kumar put profit ahead of patients.
A recent U.S. Attorney statement claims that “Kumar was consistently the top-paid provider in Tennessee for Medicare and Medicaid for hysteroscopy biopsy services, and he profited substantially from these criminal acts.”
A hysteroscopy is a procedure used to examine the inside of the uterus, which involves inserting a thin, lighted tube through the vagina and cervix into the uterus, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine.
Patients of Dr. Kumar have filed complaints of sexual misconduct and sexual abuse, as well as similar accusations of coercing women to cross state lines to his Memphis clinic for unlawful sexual activities.
Because of this, victims may be entitled to compensation, even if the abuse took place years ago.
If you or a loved one were harassed by Dr. Kumar, abused, given an unnecessary medical exam, felt uncomfortable during an exam with him or were inappropriately touched, you should speak with an attorney as soon as possible.
Charges Against Dr. Kumar
The FBI believes Dr. Kumar primarily targeted patients between the timeframe of September 2019 and April 2024 but the abuse could have potentially occurred for longer.
The FBI alleges that Dr. Kumar sexually abused patients by performing unnecessary gynecological procedures, using reprocessed single-use medical devices and allegedly billing Medicare and Medicaid fraudulently, claiming the procedures were medically necessary and performed with new or properly sterilized equipment.
Dr. Sanjeev Kumar was recently charged with Enticement and Inducement to Travel to Engage in Illegal Sex Acts, Adulteration of Single Use Devices, Mislabeling of Reprocessed Single Use Devices, Adulteration of Hysteroscopes Cleared for Reprocessing, and Health Care Fraud.
