Dr. Spiegel’s Federal Investigation

An extensive federal investigation into pediatrician Dr. Craig A. Spiegel is underway.

Dr. Craig Spiegel, a St. Louis area pediatrician, has been indicted and accused of exchanging prescriptions for sex acts and he is also under investigation for allegations that he abused current and former pediatric patients.

Although Spiegel surrendered his state license to practice medicine after his federal indictment in March 2024, the defense attorneys allege that he is presumed innocent until the allegations are proven.

Officials accused Dr. Spiegel of writing more than 1,200 prescriptions with no legitimate medical reason, including highly addictive drugs to people he knew had addiction problems, in exchange for sex acts and cash.

Spiegel would prey on women he knew were drug addicts or whom he had treated when they were child patients at his Bridgeton clinic.

In some cases, he knew the opioids and amphetamines he was prescribing were being shared with others, including children, yet he still prescribed them.

In one case, he prescribed drugs in exchange for sex acts with a woman who later died of an overdose at age 40.

A recent complaint states that “concerns about Spiegel’s conduct around children has increased dramatically over the past few days.” And at least one child told federal investigators that Spiegel was inappropriate during an exam.

Dr. Spiegel broke his patients’ trust in a very serious way and it is illegal and unethical for a doctor to prescribe controlled substances as payment for sexual favors or for cash.

Because of this, victims may be entitled to compensation, even if the abuse took place years ago.

Victims and survivors of sexual abuse suffer damages such as missed work, loss of income, medical bills for treatment, therapy, counseling, and more.

Lawsuits Against Dr. Spiegel

Spiegel has been formally accused of prescribing drugs in exchange for sexual acts or sexual photographs to people he knew had substance use disorders, and he knew that issuing the prescription was illegal and could endanger the recipient’s mental health and physical safety.

According to court filings, Spiegel has also been accused of sexual abuse by some of his patients.

And there are allegations that he abused current and former patients. One patient alleged Spiegel forced her to perform oral sex on him in a public bathroom.

Federal prosecutors expect new allegations to lead to state charges against Dr. Craig Spiegel.

Spiegel’s indictment charges include 17 counts of illegal distribution of controlled substances and six counts of making false statements related to health care matters.

Federal prosecutors have thousands of corroborating text messages, including instances where Spiegel texted “You owe me big time” to one woman, as well as threats to another woman, stating that he had sent her prescriptions “assuming [she] would hold up [her] end.”

According to U.S. Attorney Sayler A. Fleming, “The conduct alleged in the indictment represents an exploitation of patients who were vulnerable because they had been treated by Dr. Spiegel since they were girls, because they were struggling with an addiction.”

It’s common for victims of sexual assault, abuse, and harassment to discount the fact that they’ve been hurt by a person that they trust, such as a doctor, or they might feel ashamed or embarrassed and scared to tell others about the abuse.

If you or a loved one have experienced sexual abuse, unwanted sexual advances, inappropriate sexual touching, or indecent exposure, you or your loved one should receive help and seek justice.

Although we know that even 7-figure compensation can’t erase a life-altering event, or heal the pain, it can at least help reduce the financial stress and help hold offenders accountable to help prevent future abuse and help prevent it from happening to others.
