Liquid Burning Fire Pits
Liquid-burning fire pits use liquid fuels, rather than wood or gas, to produce real flames. They are sold as fire pits, firepots, miniature fireplaces or portable fires and are popular in tabletop, portable, and indoor/outdoor settings.
Most liquid-burning fire pits are small, portable fire features designed to sit on tables or other flat surfaces. They use liquid fuels, usually isopropyl alcohol, ethanol, or other fuel to create real flames.
Almost all alcohol and liquid-burning fire pits violate voluntary safety standards, as they ignite the liquid in the same location it was poured into; this can cause flame jetting, third-degree burns, or even death.
Since alcohol flames can burn cleanly and can be nearly invisible, especially in daylight, they can lead to flame jetting when refilling the fire pit reservoir.
Flame jetting is a serious event that can occur while pouring the alcohol used to fill the fire pit reservoir. When this occurs, the fire flashes back to the alcohol container and suddenly propels the burning alcohol out of the container and onto anyone nearby, causing serious injuries.
Alcohol can also splash, spill, or leak out of the fire pit reservoir during use, causing a flash fire that can spread and create larger, hotter flames that can escape the unit.
Because of this, anyone who was burned or suffered an injury from using a recalled liquid-burning fire pit may be eligible to receive significant compensation.
More than 50 fire pit manufacturers/brands, including some whose products have been recalled, are currently being investigated for potentially causing burn injuries.
Although we know that compensation can’t erase a life-altering event or heal the pain, it can help reduce financial stress and help prevent similar accidents from happening to others.

Fire Pits Recalled Due to Risk of Serious Burn Injury
In October 2024, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recalled close to 90,000 Colsen-branded firepits after dozens of people reported burn injuries.
The recalled fire pits were sold online at Colsenfirepits.com, Amazon.com, Wayfair, Walmart, Sharper Image, FlipShop, Grommet, Meta, and TikTok from approximately January 2020 to July 2024 and included several models.
On December 19, 2024, the CPSC issued a Product Safety Warning concerning FLIKRFIRE Tabletop Fireplaces. These small fire pits—available in square, round, XL, and mini models—are now flagged as a safety risk.
In December 2024, the U.S. CPSC issued a consumer alert pointing to portable liquid-burning firepits as a “hazard” to consumers and urged consumers to stop using alcohol or other liquid-burning fire pits that violate voluntary standards and present flame jetting, burn risks, and fire hazards.
Additionally, alcohol and other liquid fuels can splash or leak during use, potentially triggering flash fires and larger flames that spread beyond the unit.
The CPSC also stated that consumers should immediately stop using and dispose of the recalled fire pits as they could lead to injury quickly and unexpectedly, causing burns in less than one second, which can be serious and deadly.
The CPSC received at least 31 reports of flame jetting and flames escaping from the fire pits, resulting in over 60 injuries and 2 deaths.
Multiple incidents involved third-degree burns, and at least six incidents have involved surgery, prolonged medical treatment, admission to burn treatment facilities, loss of function, physical therapy, or permanent disfigurement.
In 2024, CBS News reported that a New Hampshire couple were both engulfed in flames after a tabletop fire pit shot out flames while they were sitting around with their family, they died a week after the fire left them with severe third-degree burns.
A Massachusetts woman was gifted a tabletop fire pit, and just after setting it up, it erupted into flames, setting her on fire, causing third-degree burns and leading to several days of hospitalization.
Other incidents involve a 9-year-old child and a woman being injured in a fire caused by “an indoor ignitable liquid flame kit.” A Toronto doctor died after a refueling incident that left her with burns to 95% of her body.
A 55-year-old dentist was sitting directly across from a person refilling a tabletop firepot, which ignited by accident, causing it to become like a flamethrower. She was badly burned and later developed an infection that led to her death three days later.
According to a recent complaint, manufacturers of recalled liquid-burning fire pits failed to warn consumers that when refilling the fire pit with liquid fuel, alcohol flames could cause dangerous flame jetting, where fire flashes back to the container and violently ejects burning liquid.
As a result, lawsuits are currently being pursued to help compensate victims and their families for their suffering.
Anyone who was burned or suffered an injury from using a recalled liquid-burning fire pit may be eligible to receive significant compensation.
